Vancouver, the sushi capital of Canada, has been steadily making a name for itself in the izakaya scene.
One of the pioneers in the city’s izakaya landscape is Guu Izakaya, which has been delighting locals and tourists alike with their Japanese comfort dishes, tapas, oden, and lively atmosphere since 2012.
With five locations spread across the city, Guu has become a household name in Vancouver.
Last month, we brought you the exciting news of Guu opening a new Osaka-street food style concept called Guu Toramasa in Downtown Vancouver. The new concept is set to open mid-April.
This new addition to the Guu family aims to “keep the concept of ‘For your daily re-charging spot’ of all Guu Izakaya and introduce Osaka street food to Vancouver locals.” Osaka, a city in Japan known for its outgoing residents and rich food culture, has even been referred to as the “kitchen of the nation.”
Get ready to indulge in famous Osaka street food items like Takoyaki (octopus balls), Okonomiyaki (savory pancakes), Kushikatsu (deep-fried skewers), and Yakiniku (grilled meat).
Guu Toramasa will also offer a unique Osaka-style Takoyaki experience—sandwiching a Takoyaki ball between shrimp crackers!
Another must-try item on the menu is Tonpei-Yaki, a type of teppan-yaki that originated in Osaka. Distinct from Okonomiyaki, Tonpei-Yaki is a staple dish in the Kansai region.
The preparation method varies, but the most commonly known recipe involves grilling pork and beaten eggs on a teppan and then garnishing it with mayonnaise or sauce. Some variations also use flour dough. Tonpei-Yaki may resemble Okonomiyaki, but its taste sets it apart!
Of course, no izakaya spot is complete without a fantastic drink menu. At the media preview, we were treated to four delectable cocktails: Lychee Lychee, Gin Yuzu Soda, and a Ramune cocktail, among others. These refreshing drinks are sure to elevate your izakaya experience.
As for the interior, Guu Toramasa skillfully blends modern and traditional izakaya design elements. In the main dining area, you’ll find a sleek bar, a sushi bar and some large white marble tables in the center. At the back area, you’ll find booths and more 2 secluded rooms that showcase a more traditional Japanese design.
While the original grand opening was set for April 1st, due to an unexpected kitchen maintenance issue, the launch has been pushed back to the week of April 10th.
