After being damaged by an adjacent fire, Honolulu Cafe in Kerrisdale makes a triumphant return.
The popular Hawaii coffee shop chain, known for its cozy aloha ambiance and Kona-grown and roasted beans, had to shut its doors 58 days ago.
Although the fire didn’t reach the cafe, it still suffered from significant smoke damage.
The October 1st fire wreaked havoc on five businesses including Nando’s and Pho Tan Vietnamese Restaurant, leaving many of them in a total loss.
Navigating Through Adversity
The Honolulu Cafe team didn’t let this setback keep them down for long.
While their original spot was being restored, they operated out of Jess Restaurant, just a block away, ensuring their loyal customers could still enjoy their favourite brews and bites.
This temporary pop-up phase not only kept the café afloat but also highlighted the strong community spirit in Kerrisdale.
Rising Fire Incidents in Vancouver
It is hard not to notice the increasing number of businesses in Vancouver affected by fires this year.
From the destruction of Dolce Amore on Commercial Drive to the displacement of food businesses due to a commissary kitchen fire on East Hastings, the city has witnessed several such unfortunate events.
The most notable was the loss of the beloved Shanghai restaurant, Long’s Noodle House, in May, which also succumbed to an unexplained fire.
Long’s recently reopened in Richmond Admiralty Centre.
As Honolulu Cafe opens its doors once again, it’s not just a reopening; it’s a celebration of community, strength, and the enduring spirit of local businesses. From rising food costs to high turnover, food businesses in the city have really been going through the gauntlet.
