After a lengthy delay, the city’s most popular Japanese tonkatsu restaurant – Saku – has quietly soft opened their new Burnaby outpost today on May 17th.
This is Saku’s 5th outpost in Metro Vancouver.
This news was shared with us by a community member (Irma), who spotted Saku doing their test run last night.
Saku opened in 2018 on Robson Street and quickly made a name for itself as the city’s first Japanese Tonkatsu (think mouthwatering fried pork cutlet) specialty restaurant.
The founders spent two years researching the art of Tonkatsu, traveling to Japan, Korea, New York, and Toronto to sample various offerings.
After confirming with the Saku team they are open to the public, we went to take a look.
The new location is situated at one of the corner units at the Solo District towers, across from The Amazing Brentwood.
It interior is chic, modern, and sleek where the design meets cozy comfort.
The space is bathed in natural light from large windows and high ceiling, creating a bright and inviting atmosphere.
The colour palette is small departure from their other locations with its calming mix of greens and warm earth tones.
Menu you wise – you’ll find it mirror their other locations with variety of katsu sets available.
This location will not have the special items found at the Richmond outpost, like the Tomahawk katsu set, though.
The pork is sourced from an Alberta farm that also exports to Japan, and uses a unique homemade panko, courtesy of local bakeries.
One neat part about their katsu sets is that the rice, tonjiro soup, and salad are all available for refill. Make sure to use their housemade salad dressing too!
During the soft opening phase, the hours will be 11:30AM – 3PM and 5PM – 9:30PM.
The grand opening date is yet to be determined, but likely it will be the following week.
