From Side Hustle to Main Street: A Popular Local Matcha Pop-Up Is Opening Its First Shop

Vancouver’s matcha obsession clearly isn’t slowing down.

Mitchie Matcha, a popular local pop-up, is officially setting up its first permanent shop on Main Street.

We spotted new signage for the brand taking over the unit recently vacated by Tea Thyme Cafe.

This opening is a major milestone for owner Michelle, who started the concept as a “side hustle” back in November 2024.

Like many great local businesses, this one was born out of burnout.

Michelle openly shares that she started the brand because she needed something “more motivating and meaningful” than the stability of her corporate job.

Her philosophy on matcha is refreshingly blunt.

The brand’s motto is: “If matcha tastes like grass, we are cows over here”.

She insists that if you don’t like matcha, it’s likely because you’ve just had a bad one at a random cafe.

For the past year, the team (and their adorable dog mascot, Yuzu) has been popping up at markets across the city.

Earlier this month, Michelle began documenting the reality of opening a storefront on social media, taking followers along on the renovation journey.

It wasn’t until this week that she finally revealed the exact location.

According to her latest updates, she is aiming to have the cafe up and running by January.

This adds another exciting name to the city’s growing list of new arrivals.

Mitchie Matcha joins other upcoming spots like Ultramarinos Pepe, Pho Anh Vu Kingsway, and Raclette Steaks.
