Richmond isn’t the only city experiencing big changes in its food scene. Vancouver, too, has seen its fair share of surprises.
And one of the most anticipated openings this Winter has unfortunately hit a snag.
Yep, we’re talking about the arrival of Toronto’s Michelin One-Star restaurant, Aburi Hana, which has now been postponed.
Back in May 2023, we shared the exciting news that Aburi Hana was set to open on the ground floor of the new Alberni by Kengo Kuma building, occupying nearly 3,000 sq.ft at the corner of Alberni and Cardero Street.
The restaurant, brought to Vancouver by the same group behind Miku and Minami, was expected to bring its acclaimed Kyōto-style Kaiseki dining experience to the city.
This refined concept would focus on seasonal dishes that are artfully crafted and incorporates signature Aburi (flame-seared) techniques for a contemporary twist on ancient culinary traditions.
However, during our patrol this weekend, we spotted some major changes.
The signage for Aburi Hana has been quietly removed, and replaced by a notice that the unit is now available.
A peek through the glass showed no progress on the space, which has remained untouched for around a year now.
According to a spokesperson for Aburi Restaurants Canada Group to Noms Magazine, and in a now public announcement by the group, they acknowledged the significant delays in bringing Aburi Hana to Vancouver.
The statement read, “Due to significant delays, the arrival of Aburi Hana Vancouver has been postponed, but hopefully not for too long. We’ll be sure to provide updates when a new location is secured in the future.”
While it won’t be opening at its originally planned location, the good news is that the project is still in the works.
The original Winter opening is also now up in the air.
But fans of this top Japanese restaurant can rest assured that Aburi Hana will eventually make its way to Vancouver.
Just not as soon as originally hoped.
And don’t forget to share this news with your fine dining-loving friends!
