Vancouver’s highly rated spot for authentic, customizable, scratch-made Japanese curry is hitting a major milestone this June!

Mr. Japanese Curry, the cozy 4.6-star spot near Broadway-City Hall, is celebrating five years of serving up authentic Japanese curry, and they’re doing it with a heartfelt menu inspired by real moments behind the scenes.

From June 9 – 14, they’ll be offering two special anniversary items:

  • Stewed Hamburger Curry – $10
  • Yuzu Amazake Soda – $7

Owner Keiya shared with Noms Magazine that the braised hamburger curry is a dish close to his heart, originally made by his longtime prep cook, Kaoru, who’s been with him since day one.

“She always brought me home-cooked breakfast, and her braised hamburger was my favourite. I told her I wanted to share it with everyone for our 5th anniversary.”

The Yuzu Amazake Soda is equally meaningful.

It features amazake, a sweet, fermented rice drink made by Kizuna Sake Inc., a Penticton-based sake brewery that Keiya is part of.

Infused with yuzu, the drink is light, refreshing, and packed with health benefits, which is a nod to Keiya’s mission of sharing more than just food, but also wellness and culture.

Mr. Japanese Curry first opened in May 2020, just months as the pandemic hit and locked the entire world down.

Keiya had taken over the space in March and began soft opening that spring, unsure what the future would hold. But the community showed up, and thanks to a takeout-friendly setup and a whole lot of hustle, the restaurant quickly found its footing.

And it’s not just the curry that stands out.

Keiya makes all the curry sauces from scratch, including a beef curry made with an exclusive recipe from a popular manufacturer in Hyogo, Japan.

The menu is fully customizable, and over the years, he’s tweaked it based on customer feedback like creating a gluten-free, soy-free vegan curry after learning about local allergies.

That dedication to quality and community is part of what’s kept Mr. Japanese Curry not only alive, but thriving.

“Thank you to all my customers who supported me from day one, especially during the pandemic,” Keiya said. “We will continue to serve you the best Japanese curry in Vancouver! I look forward to sharing more of Japan with you all!”

Keiya’s next upcoming project, Mori Matcha will be selling matcha powder and other tea drinks at Mr. Japanese Curry and at events.

If you haven’t tried Mr. Japanese Curry yet, or you’ve been meaning to go back, this week is the perfect excuse to stop by, grab a braised hamburger curry, and toast to five years (and many more to come).
