Richmond’s food scene is heating up with a bunch of new arrivals lately.
And the latest we spotted is Mikann Shabu, a soon-to-open restaurant near the Richmond Oval.
It is taking over the former Yifang unit, which was connected to Dinesty next door.
While there’s no official website or social media presence for Mikann yet, we’re expecting it to offer a Japanese Shabu Shabu experience based on the name.
For those unfamiliar, Shabu Shabu is a Japanese hotpot dish where thinly sliced meat and vegetables are boiled in water and served with flavourful dipping sauces.
The name “Shabu Shabu” mimics the swishing sound ingredients make as they’re stirred in the pot.
A peek through the window reveals that renovations are still in progress, but we can already see the centerpiece of the space—a large round counter bar.
It seems that bar will likely serve as the main seating area.
This setup might remind Richmond locals of Gokudo Shabu Shabu, another spot known for its round counter bar design.
However, from what we can gather, Mikann Shabu and Gokudo Shabu Shabu aren’t connected.
From further research, Mikann’s interior design is being done by Richmond’s VF+Y Interiors, who has worked on multiple local restaurants like 2 Gather Restaurant, Daigyo Cafe, Petpls Cafe, Kaneko Hannosuke, and more.
According to their restaurant project feature, Mikann will feature a rich palette of deep blacks, gold accents, and neutral tones, creating a fancy vibe.
The round counter bar will be the heart of the restaurant, offering an interactive dining experience for guests.
Intentionally low lighting is used for a cozy feel and large pendant lights will provide focused illumination over the center bar.
As hot pot continues to dominate the Metro Vancouver dining scene, it’s exciting to see a restaurant like Mikann Shabu emerge.
We’ll keep you posted with more details as they become available!
Don’t forget to share this with your hotpot-loving friends!
