Legendary Kam Wai Opens New Hastings Sunrise Location Offering Affordable Dim Sum

Vancouver’s most iconic Chinatown dim sum shop just leveled up, and we went to check it out for ourselves.

Kam Wai Legacy, the new Hastings Sunrise outpost from the team behind Kam Wai Dim Sum, has opened at 2285 East Hastings Street.

We first spotted the location back in May 2025 when signs went up, and now the doors are officially open.

Kam Wai has been a family-run operation in Vancouver’s Chinatown since 1991, making this a nearly 35-year legacy.

We hopped by during their soft open, and quickly we found the new space is noticeably larger than the original shop on East Pender Street.

Walking in, the first thing you notice is the modern interior with warm wood-slatted ceilings, grey tile floors, and columns decorated with hand-painted dim sum illustrations.

A striking red accent wall with gold dragon artwork and a large circular bamboo steamer design serves as the centerpiece of the room.

The ordering counter sits in the middle of the space with digital menu screens mounted above and a glass display case filled with freshly made items like red bean sesame balls and spring rolls.

Behind the counter, you can see the open kitchen where everything is being prepared.

On one side of the space, there are large commercial fridges stocked with Kam Wai’s frozen and take-home dim sum, including pork and shrimp wontons, chicken buns, marinated tender beef, and mung bean and pork rice wraps.

On the other side, there is a small dine-in area with seating for about 10 people across a mix of tables and bar-style seats.

The hot food menu is where things get exciting.

Steamed har gow and siu mai are $5 for four pieces each, BBQ pork bao is $2.62, and most of the smaller buns like black sesame, cream custard, red bean, and mini vegan bao are just $1.90.

Rice bowls like the blackbean sparerib and ginger chicken are $6.68, and congee is $4.28.

They also have deep fried items like spring rolls and sesame balls, plus made-to-order deep fried mini buns with condensed milk.

We grabbed a har gow, siu mai, and a char siu bao for lunch and the total came to $15.

For the quality and quantity, that is a steal considering what dim sum usually costs at a sit-down restaurant these days.

The spot was already drawing a steady stream of customers when we visited.

The new Hastings Sunrise location joins a growing list of recent openings in the area, alongside spots like C Market Coffee Main, Dante Bentall Centre, and Peace & Culture.
