Vancouver’s West End just got a new neighbourhood café that promises a taste of southern France.

SUD Café officially opened its doors on September 15 at 1082 Cardero Street, right beside Lord Roberts Field and along the Cardero Bikeway.

The café replaces the old Cardero Grocery building, which was torn down and rebuilt into a modern two-storey space.

Originally slated to launch in the spring, SUD’s debut was pushed back by city paperwork.

The wait is over though, and co-owners Luc Duval (the chef and owner behind Gastown’s Petrichor Social) and Thibault Nicaise are now welcoming guests starting bright and early at 7 a.m. daily.

Inside, the café feels both modern and rustic, with warm wood counters, soft lighting, and pops of green.

A tidy pastry display anchors the front, while natural light and minimalist shelving add to the cozy vibe.

There’s seating for about 16 inside, with an outdoor patio for those wanting to sip coffee in the fresh air overlooking the park.

On the menu, you’ll find staples like croissants, sablés, and sandwiches alongside specialties from Provence.

One standout is fougasse, a regional bread that comes in flavours such as elderflower and honey, pumpkin spice, and pistachio.

Drinks include espresso tonics, French mochas, and peach blossom lemonade, all designed to bring a bit of Mediterranean flair to Vancouver’s coffee scene.

For those with a bigger appetite, weekend brunch options and heartier sandwiches are also part of the lineup, making the café a versatile stop whether you’re on the go or settling in.

The café’s mission is about more than food and drinks.

Duval has said the goal is to create a space where people feel like regulars from the moment they walk in, echoing the culture of southern French cafés where atmosphere and conversation matter just as much as what’s on the plate.

SUD Café joins other recently opened restaurants, including Läderach, Chun Fun How, and Oui Patisserie.
