If you have been to Steveston in the last two decades, you probably recognize the old Yokohama Teppanyaki unit.
After over 20 years of service, that long-standing staple shut down last year.
But the space did not stay empty for long.
A new authentic spot called Enishi Japanese Kitchen officially soft-opened in its place last week.
We hopped by (anonymously) to check out what they are all about.
It carries the torch of providing a genuine Japanese experience in the village.
That is, Japanese-run and Japanese-owned.
The name “Enishi” itself means a meaningful or special connection.
That local connection runs deep here.
According to the head chef, he opened Enishi with a friend who is now the manager, and both have previously worked in Steveston.
The vibe inside is casual with a mix of table seating and spots right at the sushi bar.
It is already proving to be exactly what the neighbourhood needed.
Even on a cold weekday afternoon, the restaurant was almost completely packed.
That speaks volumes considering how quiet Steveston usually gets during the off-season months.
The menu is incredibly deep and seems designed to handle any craving.
You can find everything from elaborate Gozen sets and premium nigiri to small personal hot pots and lunch teishoku.
We got the Bara Sushi & Noodle Set, which is a fantastic lunch option.
It comes with assorted chopped sashimi on sushi rice, crispy tempura, and your choice of udon or soba.
The precision and quality of the food were obvious and made for a filling meal.
Although Steveston has several Japanese restaurants already, Enishi makes for a solid option and addition to the area.
Enishi now joins other recently opened food spots in Richmond like Yang’s Dumpling, And Drinks and Baking Factory.
