A new sushi restaurant has opened in Downtown Vancouver’s West End, and it’s already drawing attention from Vancouverites!
Akihana Sushi made its quiet debut in late September, taking over the space formerly occupied by Downtown Sushi Bar, which had operated for more than two decades.
Located next to La Belle Patate on Davie Street, the new spot inherits a recently renovated interior that now features dark ceilings, warm ambient lighting, and sleek booth seating, creating a modern, casual dining atmosphere.
Despite its low-key launch, Akihana has been steadily busy, even during off-peak hours.
That kind of early traction is notable for a newcomer in a neighbourhood where competition among sushi restaurants is particularly strong, especially with Tom Sushi down the block.
The menu is very extensive, offering a wide selection of classic and contemporary Japanese dishes.
You can expect everything from sashimi and donburi to ramen, tempura, and an array of specialty rolls.
Highlights include the Rainbow Roll, Kamikaze Roll, Red Dragon Roll, and the deep-fried Crazy Boy Roll.
The kitchen also serves aburi-style nigiri, oshi sushi, and well-portioned bento boxes and combo sets available for dine-in or takeout.
In just a few weeks, Akihana Sushi has already earned a 4.9-star rating on Google, with more than 180 reviews praising both the food quality and service.
Based on the high rating, we went to make a visit anonymously to see what they are all about.
The server suggested their most popular items (and her personal faves), which included the Hot Summer Roll and Red Dragon Roll.
Both were carefully plated, fresh, and balanced in flavour.
No complaints there.
With generous portions, welcoming staff, and attention to detail, Akihana is a promising new addition to the West End dining scene that has seen a lot of changes in the last couple of years.
It joins a growing list of recent Vancouver openings that includes Viet Street Food Cafe, Nizu Cafe, and Belli Pizza.
