Chinatown Is Getting a Nigerian Restaurant and We Are Here For It

Chinatown is getting a new restaurant, and this time it is not a Chinese spot.

We spotted coming soon signs for VanSuya, a brand known for authentic Nigerian cuisine.

They are taking over the previous MiLA unit on Keefer Street, right across from Juke Fried Chicken.

It is an interesting addition to a neighbourhood that has traditionally been defined by Chinese food and culture.

If you are not familiar with VanSuya, the brand started back in 2021 as a takeout concept in Vancouver.

What began as a small operation focused on delivery and pickup quickly built a loyal following among those craving West African flavours.

They eventually leveled up and opened their first dine-in restaurant and lounge in Surrey back in 2023.

That location gave them a chance to expand beyond takeout and create a full dining experience.

Now they are ready to bring that same energy and those diverse Nigerian flavours to a proper sit-down spot in Chinatown.

The menu is a celebration of the rich and varied flavours of Nigerian cuisine.

The star of the show is suya, a popular West African street food that has roots in Northern Nigeria.

Think thinly sliced, spicy grilled meat skewers seasoned with a dry spice rub called yaji.

The spice blend typically includes ground peanuts, ginger, paprika, and cayenne pepper.

It is the kind of dish that hits different when you are craving something bold and smoky.

Beyond the suya, expect to see other Nigerian favourites on the menu.

That includes Asun Jollof, which features spicy grilled goat meat served with the iconic West African rice dish.

There is also Asun Spaghetti, Fried Plantain, and other traditional dishes that showcase the depth of Nigerian cooking.

For those unfamiliar with Nigerian food, this is your chance to explore a cuisine that does not get nearly enough representation in Vancouver.

There is no official opening date yet for the Chinatown outpost.

However, based on their latest Instagram post, it seems like things are moving along and it should be coming soon.

We will keep you posted once we hear more details about when the doors will officially open.

VanSuya now joins a growing list of upcoming food spots making their way to Vancouver like BBQ and Co, Eggstatic, and The Waffle Co.
