Canada’s prime minister rang in the Year of the Horse at a dim sum spot in Richmond.

Mark Carney was spotted at Continental Seafood Restaurant on February 18, where he was seen enjoying dim sum and handing out red pockets containing gold coin chocolates to celebrate the Lunar New Year.

On Red Note, a local who was at the restaurant during Carney’s visit, shared her photo posing with Prime Minister Carney and the branded red pocket she received from him.

In the post, she shared that he was very kind and friendly to the public.

Carney’s visit was part of a broader trip to British Columbia, where he was touring an affordable housing project.

It also comes just days after the prime minister attended a vigil in Tumbler Ridge, where he joined other federal party leaders to honour the victims of the mass shooting that took place on February 10.

Continental Seafood Restaurant is one of Richmond’s most well-known Chinese banquet restaurants.

The restaurant is known for its traditional Cantonese dim sum served from trolley carts, a style that has become increasingly rare across Metro Vancouver.

The dining room is large enough to seat up to 600 guests and regularly hosts banquets, special events, and live entertainment.

This is not the first time Carney has been spotted at a local food institution during a visit to the Lower Mainland.

In November, the prime minister stopped by New Town Bakery in Vancouver’s Chinatown, a family-run shop that has been serving steamed buns and baked goods since 1980.

He posted about that visit on social media, writing “New Town Bakery is a staple of Vancouver’s Chinatown. This family-run small business has been serving some of the city’s best steamed buns for generations.”

Regardless, it is steamed buns in Chinatown or cart-style dim sum in Richmond, the prime minister appears to have a soft spot for the Lower Mainland’s Chinese food scene.
