Sad news for rice cake lovers in Metro Vancouver.
Rice Cake Master, formerly known as Nam Dae Moon, has announced that both of its Metro Vancouver locations are closing this month.
The Burnaby outpost was the first to go, officially closing its doors on October 10, according to the shop’s Chinese social media.
The Richmond location, meanwhile, will continue operating a little longer, with its final day set for October 26.
In a post shared on Facebook, the Richmond team thanked customers for their support over the past four and a half years, writing that it has been “an honor to share our passion with you.”
To show appreciation, they’re offering 50% off all rice cakes and glutinous rice cakes (excluding mochi and cake series) from October 4 to 26.
Nam Dae Moon chain was founded in China back in 2011 by a Korean-Chinese family.
They based their traditional recipes for tteok, soft, chewy steamed rice cakes that are low in sugar and rich in texture.

The brand first expanded to Toronto before making its way west, opening in Richmond in 2021 and Burnaby in 2022.
Over the years, the shop became known for its elegant mochi and rice cakes in flavours like Oreo Chocolate Lava, Chestnut and Date, and Red Bean Glutinous Rice Cake.
In 2023, both BC stores quietly rebranded to Rice Cake Master, keeping the same recipes and menu.

Since the closure announcement, the Richmond shop has seen long lines of customers hoping to grab their favourites one last time before they’re gone for good.
Many items have already been selling out daily as locals take advantage of the farewell discount.
