Richmond’s Union Square—aka Diabetes Plaza according to the Chiness community—is no stranger to turnover.
But lately, the changes have been hitting longtime food spots just as much as bubble tea shops.
And now, another OG eatery has quietly shut down and will likely be a hit for Richmond locals.
Hanppy Tofu Pot, which had been serving up affordable Chinese-Korean comfort food since 2012, has quietly closed its Richmond location.
We recently spotted new signage at Hanppy’s former unit, meaning that a new spot called Lucky J is moving in.
But if you were hoping for details on what Lucky J will be offering, the signage isn’t giving much away.
Hanppy Tofu Pot built a loyal following over the years with its hearty portions, budget-friendly prices, and a diverse menu featuring both Korean and Chinese flavours.
Crowd faves included BBQ Pork, Mapo Tofu, Beef noodles and their signature pots.
At its peak, Hanppy had multiple locations across Metro Vancouver, including Kerrisdale, Granville, and Metrotown.
However, one by one, those locations shuttered, leaving Richmond’s Union Square as its last stronghold.
Now, with its closure, another legacy spot has disappeared from diabetes plaza.
Hanppy’s exit follows the recent closures of OG spots like Bubble World, Yifang, and Deer Garden, marking a change in the plaza’s food scene.
As Lucky J gears up to take its place, we’re left wondering—will it bring something new to the table, or will it be another short-lived addition to Richmond’s ever-changing restaurant landscape?
