The effects of the poor economy continue to reshape the local food scene as we spotted another eatery that has quietly shut its doors.

MAO JIAO HUO LA, renowned for its authentic Chuan Chuan Xiang skewers straight from Chengdu China, has closed its Richmond location, which first opened back in 2022.

MAO JIAO HUO LA was a destination for spice lovers, offering a variety of Chengdu-style skewers.

Established in August 2012, the brand gained prominence in China over the past decade before expanding internationally with its first overseas location in New York in 2019.

The Richmond restaurant was their first Canadian outpost, aiming to bring a slice of Chengdu to Canada.

Diners could select their skewers from a fridge, and staff would prepare them in either a spicy soup or dry sauce base.

Aside from skewers, it also had specialty items like sweet potato vermicelli, house special tripes, duck blood, beef tongue, and crispy pork slices.

A peek through the unit’s windows now reveals an emptied unit, save for the branded wall decals that remain.

Additionally, their Google Business listing now marks the spot as permanently closed.

No closure announcement was seen on their official website or Instagram profile.

Those looking for that spicy-goodness will now have to look elsewhere.
