End of an Era: Richmond’s Suhang Restaurant Has Quietly Closed After 17 Years

Another longtime Richmond gem has officially closed its doors and this one will hit hard for locals.

Suhang Restaurant, a staple of Richmond’s food scene since 2007, has quietly shut down.

And while closures are sadly nothing new these days, this one isn’t due to rising rent or lack of business.

It’s because the owners are retiring.

Suhang was one of those places that earned its reputation both with locals and critics.

Known for its delicate, soup-filled xiao long bao, the restaurant was frequently named one of the best spots in the city for dumplings.

It even held a proud spot on the Richmond Dumpling Trail, drawing food tourists from all over.

The restaurant’s reputation went beyond just dumplings though.

It served up authentic Suzhounese cuisine and dim sum, earning multiple awards and building a loyal customer base that stuck with them through changing times.

We first got word of the closure when we learned a new Vietnamese restaurant was coming to Richmond.

When we found out which location it was taking over, we were shocked—it’s Suhang’s.

According to a Google Review from local diner Steven Leung, the restaurant officially closed on Wednesday. He noted that many long-time customers visited one last time to say goodbye.

And while the new restaurant taking over is already in motion, Suhang’s absence will definitely be felt.

This is yet another retirement-led farewell in Richmond, joining the likes of James Snack and others who’ve stepped away after decades of service.
