If you’ve driven down West Broadway in the last 2 years, you’re probably familiar with the mess that comes with skytrain construction.
Traffic cones, detours, and a seemingly endless sea of barricades have turned the street into an obstacle course.
And the small businesses along the path have certainly felt the impact.
One restaurant along that path is Feel City BBQ, which has silently shut its doors.
This restaurant, which specialized in Xin Jiang cuisine and Chinese BBQ skewers, opened back in late 2020 but seems to have quietly closed down in May 2024.
In early 2024, they had even hopped on the trend of offering an all-you-can-eat lunch buffet, a craze that had several Richmond restaurants packed with diners.
It was a valiant attempt to attract more customers, but it seems that it wasn’t enough to battle the effects of the ongoing construction and other challenges.
The restaurant’s reviews have always been a bit of a rollercoaster ride.
Some patrons enjoyed their Xin Jiang specialties, but others were put off by rude service, a mandatory 15% tip, and inconsistent food quality.
According to several posts on Chinese social media, earlier this year the restaurant held a promotion encouraging customers to top up their gift cards or prepaid cards—a tactic that now seems misleading to many, given what followed.
Shortly after that promotion, the restaurant announced on WeChat that it would be temporarily closing for renovations.
But the “temporary” closure label on Google quietly shifted to “permanently closed.”
Many commenters now claim the restaurant has shut down for good—some even suggesting they “ran away” with customers’ prepaid funds.
We visited the site in both August and October, only to find no signs of movement.
The interior and signage remained untouched, and the restaurant’s website had vanished alongside any social media updates since February.
At this point, it’s safe to say Feel City BBQ has joined the list of casualties on West Broadway—leaving behind not just an empty storefront, but quite a few disappointed customers.
