Another longtime food spot in Vancouver is saying goodbye this summer.

Penang Bistro, a Malaysian restaurant that’s been serving the Fraser Street community for over 21 years, has officially announced that they will be closing at the end of July.

The news was shared by owner Suzan Chan in several Chinese food groups on Facebook.

Her heartfelt message thanked customers for their decades of support and confirmed that their final day of service will be Thursday, July 31, 2025.

Penang Bistro was no-frills Malaysian comfort food spot.

They were known for staples like char kway teow, beef rendang, and their flaky, chewy roti canai.

But in recent years, the restaurant also began offering a range of Japanese items like sushi and bento boxes, making it a versatile pick for dine-in and takeout.

The restaurant also operated a dessert and drink brand called Malaysia St., which was connected to the restaurant.

It specialized in Southeast Asian treats like pandan pudding, mango sticky rice, and bubble tea.

At one point, they expanded that dessert brand to Richmond. But both of those dessert spots shut down in previous years.

No specific reason was shared for the closure, but it mirrors a growing pattern of longtime restaurants in Metro Vancouver shuttering.

Often, the reason is due to rising lease costs, redevelopment pressures, or retirement.

The last day of operation will be July 31st.

The departure of Penang Bistro adds to a growing list of recent longtime food spot closures like Zefferelli’s, Bob Likes Thai Food, and Ma Dong Goul.
