Downtown Vancouver Bubble Tea Shop Shuts Down Due To Rent Hike

It looks like another closure has been spotted by our Noms Mag community.

Just last week, we shared that Xing Fu Tang’s Cambie Village location shut down due to a lease termination over unpaid rent.

And now, it looks like another Xing Fu Tang has shut down, but for a different reason.

One of our Noms Mag community members (@chungrymood) spotted that the Xing Fu Tang inside Granville SkyTrain Station has disappeared, with new signage for a Vietnamese Pho spot gearing up to take over.

This Granville SkyTrain location originally opened in 2019 at the Dunsmuir exit, right when the brown sugar bubble tea craze was at its peak.

According to our source, the majority of the Xing Fu Tangs in Metro Vancouver are independently owned.

This means this Granville Station location and the others have no relation with the Cambie owners.

Our source also says that the Granville Station location likely closed because the rent increased by a lot.

Seeing and hearing the % increase in hikes from others in the industry suggests that it isn’t unlikely that theirs may have gone up 50-100%.

So this is again yet another tale of a food business being forced out due to a rent hike.

Xing Fu Tang first arrived in Vancouver in January 2019, making a splash with its handcrafted, wok-stirred brown sugar pearls.

Unlike many other chains, Xing Fu Tang’s unique appeal was its live pearl-making process, where customers could watch as the sugar was browned in a wok before being stirred to perfection with the pearls.

Other food spots like Don Oso’s and Liberte Cafe were also recently forced out due to increases in their rents.
