The half price day on Commercial Drive is already gone. The twenty percent is not.
Chef Hyve, the halal food hall that started on Kingsway, opened its second Vancouver location at 1111 Commercial Drive on August 22.
Twenty percent off runs through August 28, so the deal outlasts the opening queue.
This is the unit that spent the last few years as The Drive Canteen, a non-alcoholic bottle shop and snack counter from the DL Chicken team alongside streetwear entrepreneur and art collector Zach Wilcox.
It sold hot dogs, nachos and zero-proof drinks before it closed earlier this year, and its owners have said they are looking for a new home.
We first spotted the Chef Hyve graphics in that window in July, when an “Eat like a chef” decal and a “Now Hiring” notice were the only things confirming anything at all.
For Chef Hyve this is the first move outside the original Kingsway shop, which opened in 2021.
That original is where you can see what the group actually does.
It runs as a mini food hall staffed by local chefs off a seasonal menu, and every menu in the building is one hundred percent halal rather than a single halal station.
The Kingsway spread runs wider than the fast-casual label suggests, covering a Mediterranean food bar, artisan salads, gourmet fish and chips, and a dessert counter with a full waffle bar.
The most-ordered item there is the Crunchy Garlic Chicken Wrap.
The founding pitch is that fast-casual food can carry the same care and ingredients as fine dining, and the group backs it with two red seal chefs cooking in open kitchens where you can watch the pass.
What the opening post confirms for Commercial Drive is the category lineup rather than the full menu: wraps, salads, burgers, burritos, loaded fries and seafood.
A halal food hall replacing a closed snack bar is the kind of swap the Drive has been making on repeat.
Chef Hyve Commercial joins a run of recent Vancouver openings including Meros House of Yogurt in Yaletown, Mello on Robson, and SUMU.
