End of an Era: East Vancouver’s 30-Year-Old Bun Bo Hue Spot Has Closed

A family-run Vietnamese noodle house on East Van’s Nanaimo Street since 1996 has closed its Vancouver location.

Song Huong, at 1613 Nanaimo Street, shared the news on Instagram on October 30.

“Our Vancouver Journey Pauses Here, But Our Story Continues,” the farewell post reads.

The Nanaimo Street location has already closed, and the restaurant’s Instagram bio now lists only its Burnaby location.

It isn’t a goodbye for good, either.

“While we are closing this chapter at our Vancouver location, this is not the end,” the post says.

“We look forward to welcoming you back to a new and improved restaurant in Vancouver once the property has been redeveloped.”

No timeline or new address for that return has been announced yet.

The post also marks 30 years for the family behind it.

“Since 1996, our family has been blessed with the opportunity to serve our community,” it reads, adding that “what started as a small family business grew into a place filled with laughter, good food, and so many cherished memories.”

Song Huong built its name on bun bo hue.

The No. 1 on its menu, the Song Huong Dac Biet Bun Bo Hue, is its most popular bowl, with thick rice noodles, beef shank, ham and pork hock.

The closure comes less than a year after the family opened a second location in Burnaby Heights.

That Burnaby restaurant, at 4660 Hastings Street, took over the former LuLu BBQ unit and serves the same menu as Nanaimo Street.

It isn’t part of the closure, and the farewell post’s caption teased “an exciting release in the coming week.”

That turned out to be a 30th anniversary celebration at the Burnaby location.

From November 13 to 15, it’s offering 30% off dine-in (excluding alcohol) and 10% off takeout.

“Same family, faces & recipes,” the restaurant wrote.

Song Huong joins other recent Vancouver closures like ZUBU Kerrisdale, Tabom Korean Cuisine and Legendary Noodle.
