The last tenant in this Main Street unit vanished after barely a month, with diners showing up to locked doors and a sign that the lease was back on the market.
Now the lights are back on, and the concept is completely different.
Rongsi Thai Bar and Bistro has taken over the Main Street space that most recently housed the short lived Mojo Cantina, the Mexican Japanese street food fusion spot that closed almost as fast as it opened.
The name is pronounced Rong See, and it is pulled from the traditional rice mills of Thailand, where grain is processed and communities gather.
The team describes the project as a way to bring the soul of Thailand to Vancouver through carefully crafted dishes and genuine hospitality, blending traditional techniques with modern creativity.
Rice and noodles sit at the heart of the menu rather than acting as filler.
The Khao Soi Chicken Leg swims in a Northern Thai coconut curry with egg noodles, while the Naem Fried Rice leans on house made fermented sour pork for a sharp, tangy kick.
A more traditional Prawns Pad Thai in tamarind sauce rounds out the rice and noodle section.
The rest of the menu lets the kitchen stretch beyond the classics.
That shows up in dishes like the Crying Tiger, a sous vide AAA beef brisket plated over charred tomato salsa, and the Laab Salmon, a Northeastern Thai style tartare paired with taro chips.

There is also a Duck Confit folded into red curry with cherry tomato and lychee, and a whole Fried Tilapia glazed in Thai caramelized fish sauce that rounds out the mains.
The bar program is one of the more interesting angles for this stretch of Main.
Handcrafted cocktails lean on Thai ingredients, the wine list is short and focused, and there are two happy hours a day from 3 to 5 pm and again from 9 pm to close.
That late night happy hour window is genuinely rare in this part of town.
The opening lands during a busy stretch for Vancouver’s casual dining scene.
For anyone who walked past the locked doors of Mojo Cantina last fall and wondered who would be brave enough to take on the space, 2650 Main Street has its answer.
Rongsi joins recent Vancouver openings like Little Spoon, The Waffle Co Robson, and Noct Coffee.
