A former gelato shop in Steveston Village just turned into something you would not expect to find on Moncton Street, and the signage alone is worth a double take.
A new spot called Uncle has opened at 3480 Moncton Street in Richmond’s Steveston Village, taking over the previous Mr. Gold’s Gelato unit.
A Noms Mag community member (Tom) tipped us off about the opening.

The restaurant, also marked as 厚利老舅 on its signage, officially opened on May 3, 2026, and specializes in authentic Chinese Chaoshan cuisine from the Shantou region of Guangdong, China.
In the Chaoshan tradition, these meatballs are typically served in a clear broth with rice noodles, seasoned with white pepper and topped with chopped celery.
The focus is Shantou-style beef balls and pork balls, the kind that are traditionally hand-pounded from whole cuts of meat until the texture becomes distinctly springy and bouncy.

While Chaoshan restaurants exist in Metro Vancouver, a dedicated Shantou beef ball and noodle shop is not something you see often, and finding one in Steveston of all places makes it even more of a surprise.
The interior from photos shows wooden tables and chairs with a traditional Chinese feel, ceiling fans, and a counter-service setup.
It looks like a sit-down spot with enough room for small groups.

Steveston’s food scene has traditionally leaned toward Japanese, seafood, and brunch spots.
A Chaoshan noodle shop on Moncton Street adds a completely different flavour to the strip.
Uncle joins other recently opened food spots in Richmond, including Magpie Coffee, Alfa Tea, and Chow Noodles.
