Empire Centre in Richmond just keeps adding to its lineup of food spots, and a familiar name to the Chinese community is making a comeback.

We spotted new signage for Mala Stir-Fried Pot, a restaurant setting up right beside Chahalo in the busy plaza.

While it may look like a brand new opening, locals on Chinese social media have pointed out that this is actually a return.

The shop, previously known as Guo Li Guo Wai (GLGW), first opened in 2016 at Kingspark Plaza across from Richmond Public Market.

It built a loyal following for its bold, wok-tossed mala stir-fry hot pots before shutting down during the pandemic.

The space was later replaced by Milko, leaving fans wondering if the fiery flavours of GLGW would ever return.

Now, nearly 5 years later, the same team is bringing it back under the new English name Mala Stir-Fried Pot, with soft opening set for August 27.

Their Red Note account confirmed the news, with a post reading: โ€œThat familiar pot of flavour, etched in our memories, is back. Ten years later, Mala Stir Fried Pot has reopened.โ€ The post promises โ€œeven better flavours and more heartfelt serviceโ€ this time around, inviting diners to gather and share the dishes that made the restaurant beloved.

As the name suggests, Mala Stir-Fried Pot focuses on Sichuan-style stir-fry hot pots, built around the spicy, numbing flavour of mala.

Everything is stir-fried on high heat with a secret base sauce made from more than 20 carefully selected spices, designed to deliver that addictive mala balance of numbing, spicy, and fragrant.

While full details of the Richmond menu arenโ€™t confirmed yet, itโ€™s likely their chicken wing pot and other stir-fried mala combinations will be front and center.

The reopening is also bringing back the same original owner, with takeout service starting first before they soft open on Aug 27th.

The reopening adds to a wave of energy at Empire Centre this summer.

The plaza has already welcomed new additions like Fruit Box, Egg Lab, and Chahalo.

That terrible parking lot is just about to get even worse…
