We know that everyone’s still buzzing over Din Tai Fung’s big opening in downtown.

But it looks like another dumpling contender is quietly making its way to Richmond, and this one’s coming straight from the streets of Shanghai.

We spotted signage for Yang’s Dumpling going up on Alexandra Road, taking over the recently closed Ban Bu Xian Szechuan Cuisine unit.

Yang’s is a legendary dumpling brand that started in Shanghai back in 1994 and boasts over 100 locations across China, plus international outposts like in Australia.

Their claim to fame?

The iconic Sheng Jian Bao, a crispy-bottom, pan-fried pork dumplings that are juicy, savoury, and ridiculously satisfying.

This Richmond outpost will mark the brand’s first BC location, though it’s not their first time in Canada.

A Toronto location opened back in 2022 but shuttered within a year.

That said, Metro Vancouver’s dumpling game is a a crowded one so it will be interesting to see how it will fare.

While there’s no confirmed opening date just yet, if the menu mirrors their other global locations, you can probably expect: Sheng Jian Bao (of course), Xiao Long Bao, Scallion Oil Noodles, Mini Pork Wonton Soup, and a selection of simple, comforting Shanghai-style sides.

Yang’s Dumpling will be joining other upcoming food spots in Richmond including: Myth Dessert & Patisserie, Miku River Rock Casino, Chahalo, Kinton Ramen, Mikan Shabu and %Arabica.
