Taiwan’s Michelin Bib Gourmand Beef Noodle Shop Is Opening In Richmond

It looks like Richmond is about to welcome a celebrated name to its vibrant dining scene.

Signs for Lao Shan Dong Homemade Noodles, a legendary Taiwanese beef noodle house, have been spotted across from Richmond Centre.

Known for its Michelin Bib Gourmand designation (good quality, good value cooking) since 2018, when the guide first arrived in Taiwan, this restaurant is a household name in the beef noodle world.

Lao Shan Dong has been serving its iconic ribbon noodles and beef broth since 1949 and for 3 generations, starting from a humble corner in a basement food court.

The secret to its success?

A rich broth made by simmering beef bones with a blend of Chinese herbs, paired with noodles that are cut and cooked to order.

The beef, sourced locally and from Australia, is tenderized over hours in the broth, creating a flavorful experience with every slurp.

Interestingly, this isn’t Lao Shan Dong’s first foray into Metro Vancouver.

Back in 2010, a location opened near Metrotown in Burnaby tucked beside what was then Daeji.

That location had decent reviews and was largely well-received for its affordability and large portions.

Unfortunately, that branch closed around 2019 and never got the chance to boast the Taiwan location being awarded the Bib Gourmand.

Moreover, Facebook user Robert Won shared information that Lao Shan Dong is actually the parent company of The One Restaurant in Burnaby, a longtime Taiwanese restaurant that locals all know and love for their towering slushies and big portion plates.

But now, it seems Lao Shan Dong is making its way to Richmond.

While this is exciting news, Richmond already boasts several highly rated Taiwanese beef noodle spots, including Uno Beef Noodle and Chef Liu at the Richmond Public Market.

And Richmond is a tough scene to impress.

Details about the Richmond opening are still sparse, and there’s no word yet on an official launch date.

We’ll be keeping a close eye on updates and will share more as soon as we know.
