We’re sadly saying goodbye to another Vancouver staple.
This time, it’s McKim Wonton Mein Saga on Kingsway that has shut its doors.
If you knew McKim Wonton Mein Saga, you knew it wasn’t about fancy decor.
It was that classic, unpretentious Hong Kong-style noodle/congee spot with a massive menu, perfect for late-night cravings.
Think comforting bowls of plain congee with all the little side dishes, or as the name suggests, a solid bowl of wonton mein.
It was the kind of place families in the neighbourhood hit up for late eats because it was nearby, stayed open late, and didn’t break the bank.
The name “McKim” actually came from their first location in Richmond on McKim Way (now long closed), before they set up shop on Kingsway around 2009.
According to one of our Noms Mag Community members (Jennifer), McKim Wonton Mein Saga officially closed up on March 9th.
The reason feels pretty wholesome: apparently, the owner is retiring to focus on grandparent duties.
Can’t argue with that!
While it’s sad to see them go, word on the street is that a Vietnamese restaurant is already slated to take over the unit.
McKim now joins the growing list of recent and upcoming closures across Vancouver like: Zefferelli’s, Footo Croissant, Meinhardt in Pacific Centre, Pizzeria Barbarella, and Meet Fresh. Definitely feels like the city’s food landscape is shifting.
