Eighty-seven dishes, 160 seats, and a dim sum kitchen that runs until 12:30 in the morning.
Yep, this is Richmond’s newest entertainment food spot.
Dimsum Caddy soft opened on August 19 at 10331 St. Edwards Drive in Richmond, in the 8,000 square foot unit the Shark Club left behind beside the Sandman Signature.
We flagged this one in May when signage went up, back when it was three words on an Instagram post and no opening date.
It is open now, and the detail that makes it make sense is who is behind it.
Owner John Su also runs GONG, the late-night Hong Kong style patio at Yue Restaurant on Alexandra Road that turned dai pai dong service into one of Richmond’s harder reservations.
“After the success of GONG’s late-night dim sum patio, we were inspired to take the concept further and combine authentic dim sum with our passion for golf,” John told Noms Magazine.
So this is not a golf bar that added dumplings.
It is a late-night dim sum operator that added golf, which is a meaningfully different bet.
The room seats a whopping 160 people including the patio, and the build leans lounge-y rather than banquet hall, with the simulator bays and the dining floor sharing one space.
John says he took the unit for its size and its parking, and for a 160-seat room off St. Edwards the parking is less a perk than a requirement.
Like many Chinese restaurants, the menu here runs deep.
It’s 87 dishes long across 12 sections.
You likely wouldn’t expect Beef Brisket Rice Noodle Soup, Salmon Sashimi or Typhoon-Style Fried Crab to be on the menu at a golf simulator bar.
So again, that throws out the idea that they’re just tacking on dim sum with golf simulators.
John points at the har gow and the siu mai as the signatures, plus a pineapple bun he describes as massive.
The span is the selling point.
John says the kitchen serves dim sum from brunch straight through to late night, which is the part no other dim sum room in Richmond is set up to do.
The risk here is the same one we wrote about in May and it has not moved.
Richmond does not grade dim sum lightly, and har gow served next to a projector screen gets judged on exactly the same terms as har gow served off a trolley.
But seeing as John and the crew comes from GONG, they’ve got the chops to deliver on the food.
Dimsum Caddy joins other recently opened Richmond spots including Datang Bistro, Pocorit Cafe, and Jing Noodle House.
