Owner Ron MacGillivray sold his house to keep supporting Fable Diner through the Broadway Subway construction.
That diner closed on August 23, and on September 20 his Kitsilano original follows it.
Fable Kitchen, the farm-to-table restaurant at 1944 West 4th Avenue, will serve its last plates on September 20 after 14 years.
“This is one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make,” MacGillivray said in the announcement.
“We’ve put so much heart, time and energy into these restaurants, and our staff and guests have become like family.”
The reasons are stacked rather than single: rising labour, food, rent and utility costs, the financial and emotional strain of the Broadway Subway construction, and the expenses left behind by Fable Diner.
The subway that was once due in late 2025 is now scheduled to open in fall 2027.
In February, MacGillivray told BCBusiness the diner’s trade had dropped about 50 percent since the Main-to-Quebec block closed, and that he had sold his house to keep supporting it.
The Fable location at 755 Richards Street, Fable Bar & Grill, stays open.
Fable Kitchen opened on May 31, 2012, when Top Chef Canada finalist Trevor Bird took over the old Refuel space with MacGillivray and Kathy Schleyer as his front-of-house partners.
The name folded “farm” into “table,” and the room came with beams reclaimed from the Cecil Hotel and tabletops Bird had blowtorched himself.
Bird has since stepped away from the restaurant, and MacGillivray has been the owner on record for years.
What the room kept was the recognition.
Michelin gave Fable Kitchen a Bib Gourmand in its first Vancouver guide in 2022 and renewed it every year through 2025, which makes it one of the oldest restaurants on that list.
The inspectors’ note reads like a brunch order: hollandaise-slicked eggs Benedict, Johnny cakes with pulled pork and tomato jam, challah French toast with caramelized apples, and a side of rosti that is “always a good idea.”
The early signatures were different, chickpea fritters with curry mayo and a “canned” tuna served in a Mason jar with lemon confit, a callback to Bird’s Top Chef run.
The brand does not end with the room.
“This isn’t the end of Fable,” MacGillivray said. “We’re looking at different ways to keep Fable going, including a food truck and collaborations.”
“If you’ve been meaning to come in one more time, now is the time,” he said. “We would love to see you.”
That leaves three weekends.
Fable Kitchen joins the list of recently closed food spots in Vancouver like Unni Pastries, Sushi Aboard and COFU Granville Island.
