How can someone walk out with a huge boat model?
Well apparently someone did.
The Gull Bar and Kitchen, a family-owned bar and restaurant in Lower Lonsdale, first posted about the theft on its Instagram on October 7.
The boat is the SS Gull, a wooden model with four masts and white cloth sails that the bar says has been in the family for decades.
According to that first post, it was stolen on October 3.
The post offered a deal: “If returned unharmed, all will be forgiven.”
Then it got a little more pointed: “If not… We know your faces. We have VIDEO EVIDENCE that we will withhold in hopes of a safe return.”
It worked, or at least the boat came back.
In a follow-up post, The Gull wrote, “THE BOAT HAS RETURNED!!!!! She sailed back to us last night!”
The photo shows the model being held up under the wooden ceiling beams at the bar, sails and rigging looking intact.
The bar thanked “our loyal crew that supported us throughout her journey on her way back home to us.”
What the post doesn’t say is how the boat got back, who brought it, or whether the video will ever come out.
The comments picked up where the post left off.
One of the most-liked replies was a petition to reveal the faces anyway, and another asked whether the thief would be buying rounds or doing dishes.
Someone else said they were happy for the bar but “kinda curious about the story,” which is fair, because so are we.
The Gull describes itself as a family-owned spot with a from-scratch food and bar menu built on ingredients from North Vancouver and around BC.
It’s open Tuesday to Thursday from 3 pm to 10 pm, and Friday and Saturday from noon to 11 pm, so the SS Gull can be checked on in person.
It’s been a busy stretch for North Vancouver food news, with Forecast Coffee opening its roastery on Esplanade and Welcome Parlour closing its Shipyards ice cream shop.
