Beloved Family-Run Burnaby Chinese Restaurant Forced To Close After 35 Years of Service

It’s a sad time for Burnaby locals as a beloved family-run Chinese restaurant has closed its doors after 35 years of serving the community.

Double One was a neighbourhood staple in the Burnaby Height area known for its tasty, high-quality dishes at affordable prices.

For many, it was a go-to spot for comforting meals and a sense of home as owners Tony and Maggie greeted you by name and a smile.

According to a Reddit post from user rpgnoob17 who spoke to the owners, the closure isn’t due to a lack of business but because the lot has been sold to a developer who plans to build a high-rise.

The post also shared that owners Tony and Maggie are searching for a new space to reopen.

This aligns with the message on Double One’s website, confirming that the building is slated for demolition.

The neighbouring Sfinaki Greek Taverna, which has also been around for 30 years, is relocating as well.

If you check Double One’s recent Google reviews, you’ll see heartfelt messages from loyal customers, many of whom have dined there for decades and since they were a child.

They’ve taken to the platform to express their gratitude for the restaurant’s service and share their sadness over the closure.

Unfortunately, this isn’t an isolated case.

Redevelopment in prime areas of Metro Vancouver continues to force out long-standing businesses, making closures like this an all-too-familiar story.

While Double One’s chapter on Hastings has come to a close, there’s hope that Tony and Maggie will find a new home for their cherished restaurant.

Until then, Burnaby Heights bids a fond and emotional farewell to a neighbourhood treasure.
