Despite the wave of restaurant closures in Metro Vancouver, the food scene continues to flourish with exciting new dining options.
One such spot that has recently caught our attention is Edokko Nigiri Sushi, a new Japanese restaurant located in Richmond’s Terra Nova neighbourhood.
Quietly soft-opening on April 26th, Edokko Nigiri Sushi is the sister restaurant to Takeya Sushi on No.1 Road. The group’s manager, Hiroshi, told Noms Magazine that many customers were asking for the return of the dine-in experience that Takeya used to offer, but was halted due to the pandemic.
Edokko was created to fill that need, providing a relaxed and comfortable space for diners to enjoy traditional Japanese cuisine with friends and family.
With skilled sushi chefs who have honed their craft in Japan, Edokko offers an array of quality sashimi, nigiri, and rolls, including unique offerings like whole squid sashimi, rarely found in Canada.
The main attraction at Edokko is definitely their traditional Japanese Gozen and Bento sets.
Edokko’s lunch menu offers an extensive selection, including various udon and soba sets, and four Gozen options (sashimi, nigiri, tempura, edokko). Their dinner menu, although more limited, features two unagi hitsumabushi items, available as a set or a Gozen.
One of the specialties at Edokko is Nagoya’s famous unagi hitsumabushi. Hitsumabushi is a traditional Japanese dish consisting of sliced grilled eel served on top of steamed rice, with accompanying condiments and garnishes.
This dish has a special way to enjoy, and a step-by-step instructional card is given to you if you do choose to order this set.
Essentially, you divide your bowl of unagi rice into four equal portions, and savor each portion in a unique manner: first, by itself; then with a combination of green onions, wasabi, and nori on top; for the third portion, pour nori broth over it; and finally, for the last portion, you may choose any of the previous options again.
This approach ultimately showcases a blend of flavours and textures.
We personally loved being able to taste the difference and opted to have our last portion with the wasabi and green onions again. Even as someone who rarely uses much wasabi, we really enjoyed the combination.
They also offer a bento set called Shokado Lunch Set that only has 10 sets available for each lunch service. The 8 item set comprises of mini assorted tempura, chawan mushi, mini assorted sashimi, BBQ fish, 2 kobachi items, a miso soup and rice. Items in this set changes depending on availability in the kitchen.
Hiroshi revealed that they chose the Terra Nova location because there were no other Japanese dine-in restaurants in the northwestern part of Richmond. Edokko Nigiri Sushi is a welcome addition for locals living outside the central areas, as well as for those looking for an authentic Japanese dining experience away from the main city.
So if you’re craving a taste of traditional Japanese cuisine, Edokko Nigiri Sushi in Richmond’s Terra Nova neighborhood is a must-try. With its carefully crafted dishes and cozy atmosphere, it’s sure to become a new favourite for sushi enthusiasts and foodies alike.
