Online Chinese Cake Shop Opens First Storefront in Richmond

If you’re into not-too-sweet cakes, there’s a new one that recently opened in Richmond.

DBB Cake has opened at 165-8171 Ackroyd Road in Richmond, the plaza with the Staples in it.

DBB Cake spent years as an online business, selling cakes through WeChat and RedNote with no room to walk into.

This is their first storefront.

They picked a unit that had been sitting empty since winter.

Hy Tea Patisserie ran this address before, and the room went dark and stayed dark.

Here is the smart part. They barely touched it.

It still gives off a cute high tea spot, slightly extra, and completely intact.

The additions are theirs. A neon sign on the back wall reads “You want to know who I’m in love with? Read the first word again.”

A second one, mounted on a faux ivy wall, reads “Believe in what you sugar for.”

There is also a pegboard rack by the window selling sprinkles, candles, toppers and bags, which is a small tell that they still expect people to bake at home and order the centrepiece here.

The display case features various cakes which runs $9.99 to $10.99 a slice.

Lychee Rose, Strawberry Milk, Cherry Choco and Classic Chocolate were in the case when we stopped by.

A second counter does butter biscuits, sandwiched with cream, in lemon curd, ube and taro, hojicha and dried apricot, and rose lychee.

We went in anonymously and got a slice of the Lychee Rose chiffon cake.

It is light and it is not sweet, which is the entire proposition here.

The cream sits loose rather than dense, dried rose petals run through the layers instead of sitting on top as decoration, and the lychee tasted like actual fruit rather than something out of a tin.

If you grew up on the supermarket birthday cake sugar wall, this will read as underpowered.

If you have been looking for the not too sweet end of the spectrum, this is aimed squarely at you.

DBB Cake joins a run of recent Richmond openings including Datang Bistro, Jing Noodle House, and Chuan Noodle House.
